Watching theses videos helped me to make the song my own. They are all sung by different people with different voices who sing in different ways. I tried to take a little from each video for example in the Jenifer Holiday video she growls a lot which is a skill I wanted to learn to use in this piece because I think it would suit my voice.

context

to help me with trying to find me character for my performance I will look into different ways people have played Effie and use different elements from each to make it my own but still use characteristics from the originals.

writer

Tom Eyen wrote Dreamgirls it is said that he wrote Deamgirls based on the group 'The Supremes'

summary:

'Deena (Beyoncé Knowles),Effie (Jennifer Hudson) and Lorrell (Anika Noni Rose) form a music trio called the Dreamettes. When ambitious manager Curtis Taylor Jr. (Jamie Foxx) spots the act at a talent show, he offers the chance of a lifetime, to be backup singers for a national star (Eddie Murphy). Taylor takes creative control of the group and eventually pushes the singers into the spotlight. However, one becomes the star, forcing another out, which teaches them about the high cost of fame.'  (http://www.guidetomusicaltheatre.com, 2016)

The reason I wanted to look up the summary of Dreamgirls:

  • To gain background information
  • To help explore my character
  • How my character feels

Even though I am only doing the one song I want to bring the the emotions the character through out the whole of musical. Effie white is the leader of a girl group called the Dreamets they become famous, and then Effie gets kicked out for being to fat so because I can some what connect to the character I want to use that to my advantage

1960s
The civil rights movement started early 1950s but had very important moments in 60s there were many different university sit in there were also sit ins in shops such as Woolworths where black people would sit down until they would be served or arrested this went on for a bout five/six months or so and then eventually the shop gave in and started to serve black students. there were also things called freedom rides where people would volunteer to ride a bus to start letting coloured and white people sit on the bus together. to do this they had to endure a lot of suffering they would have to deal with beatings and a bomb, and then again it worked and the people where able to ride a bus together. this is very important to my character because she is black and in the film Dreamgirls you can see that there is problems with their group because of colour.

Grunge is a type of rock music that was int the late 80s/ early 90s it had also struck big in the fashion side, people started wearing a lot of the outfits that they saw the rock artist wearing.

writer

The person who wrote rent is called Johnathan Larson he basses the musical off of Puccini's 'La Boheme' and is the story for a group of friends and their life in a year. La Boheme is an Italian opera with four acts, the story is about a poor poet who is in love with a poor carpenter. La Boheme is also based on a book called 'scenes from bohemian life' by Henry Murger   (https://m.imdb.com/title/tt0294870/plotsummary , 2016)

'Nightclub sensation Velma (Catherine Zeta-Jones) murders her philandering husband, and Chicago's slickest lawyer, Billy Flynn (Richard Gere), is set to defend her. But when Roxie (Renée Zellweger) also winds up in prison, Billy takes on her case as well -- turning her into a media circus of headlines. Neither woman will be outdone in their fight against each other and the public for fame and celebrity.'

writer

The writers of the musical was Bob Fosse and Fred Ebb. the musical Chicago is based on a woman's prison in the 1920's, it about how they all murdered people and how they are dealing with it. One of the leading roles is Roxie a young woman in her prime who wants to sing jazz but she ends up messing it all up when she cheats on her husband with a man who she ends up killing. since the time is 1920's flappers are very in style and so was jazz, flappers are woman who would have bobbed hair and wear short dresses and skirts. Chicago is based on a play that was written by someone called Maurine Dallas Watkins who was assigned a case in 1924 for women who were on trail. back then they found the fact that women were killing there lovers or spouses

synopsis

'In 1960s Baltimore, dance-loving teen Tracy Turnblad (Nikki Blonsky) auditions for a spot on "The Corny Collins Show" and wins. She becomes an overnight celebrity, a trendsetter in dance, fun and fashion. Perhaps her new status as a teen sensation is enough to topple Corny's reigning dance queen and bring racial integration to the show.'

1960s

The civil rights movement started early 1950s but had very important moments in 60s there were many different university sit in there were also sit ins in shops such as Woolworths where black people would sit down until they would be served or arrested this went on for a bout five/six months or so and then eventually the shop gave in and started to serve black students. there were also things called freedom rides where people would volunteer to ride a bus to start letting coloured and white people sit on the bus together. to do this they had to endure a lot of suffering they would have to deal with beatings and a bomb, and then again it worked and the people where able to ride a bus together. the story of hairspray involved segregation but they put it in the for of a dance show you can actually see a march in the film/show where black people are standing up for their rights (loosely based on the marches). (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lkXFb1sMa38, 2013 )

writer

Thomas Meehan was the man who wrote hairspray the musical was based off a film with the same name by John Walters. Walters wrote the script loosely based of real events for example in the film the dance show tracy wants to be in is called 'The Corny Collins show' and Walters got this from the 1950-60s dance show 'Buddy Deane show'   (broadwaymusicalhome.com, 2018)
costume

I want the costumes to look like we were all from the 60s because even though we are doing a  cabaret theme its still good to look like we are from the musical.

cabaret

A cabaret bar is a place where they sell alcohol however in the 1980s a place called the 'Le Chat Noir' opened and poets, performers, artists and compressors would come in and perform and audiences came in for a drink but would stay for the show. because of the clubs success after a while a lot more clubs opened up all over Paris, in the 1900s clubs started even opening up in cities in Germany and France. Cabaret brought about a knew type of vibe to the club scene they would interact with the audience and even started using the audience in the shows. when ww1 was over cabaret became even more popular even more so in Germany because there was no censorship.
